Pranayama is a Sanskrit word formed from two roots — Prana and Yama.
Prana means life force — the subtle energy that flows through all beings. It is often mistaken for air or breath, but it is actually the vital energy within the breath. When the movement of the lungs stops, life activity within the body also ceases. Thus, prana is the very essence of life.
Yama means lengthening, expansion, or control.
Together, Pranayama means the conscious regulation of life force through control of the breath. It is both a physiological and spiritual process — tuning the breath to harmonize body, mind, and energy.
